Squirrel – species and description, what they eat, where they live, photos and videos | Squirrel family

The squirrel belongs to mammals, the order of rodents and the squirrel family. It has an elongated body that ends with a flexible, fluffy tail. The squirrel has long, triangle-shaped ears with or without tassels at the end. The color of the coat ranges from dark brown to red, the belly is light in color. In winter, the squirrel can turn gray. The color of a mammal’s coat depends on the habitat.

Whole body molt occurs twice a year, but the tail can only molt once a year. In spring, the animal molts – April-May, and in autumn – September-November.

The squirrel can be considered an omnivorous rodent, it can be used for food:

  • seeds from coniferous trees (from spruce, pine, cedar, fir);
  • hazel, acorns, nuts;
  • mushrooms;
  • buds of young plants;
  • berries;
  • plant roots;
  • lichen;
  • herbs.

If the year is bad, then most of their diet consists of herbs and roots. During the mating season, squirrels prefer to eat animal food: insects, larvae, eggs of small birds, small vertebrates. In early spring, they can gnaw the bones of dead animals.

For the winter quarters, they prefer to make supplies that are stored in hollows, rhizomes, or simply hung on trees with dense branches. These products include: nuts, mushrooms, cones, acorns. They do not remember about their reserves and often find them by accident. Proteins can feed on the supplies of other animals.

The squirrel is the most common rodent species that lives on almost all continents. They are found in deciduous forests, evergreen forests, mountains and lowlands. Representatives of this species can often be seen in city parks, in private gardens.

Let’s list the most common types of proteins:

Not all varieties of the squirrel family are represented here, but the most common ones.

By the color of the squirrel, it is impossible to distinguish the male from the female, in some species they can be recognized by their size, since the male may be larger than the female in weight and in the length of the tail.

Rodents of the squirrel family are mobile animals leading an arboreal lifestyle. They make little effort when jumping from one tree to another. In the process of jumping, the animal helps itself with its tail and paws. Depending on the type of forest, the appearance of the place of residence changes:

  • in deciduous forests, the rodent lives in a hollow, the bottom of which is lined with dry grasses or lichen;
  • in coniferous forests, they make nests for themselves, which they build from branches, spread wool, moss, dry leaves on the bottom.

The animal can occupy empty bird dwellings. The number of such nests in one squirrel can reach 15; it can change its place of residence every two or three days. Thus, from 3 to 6 squirrels can winter in one nest.

Mass migration in animals begins in early autumn. The animals are capable of moving 300 km from the previous place of residence.

The amount of squirrel droppings will depend on the habitat, most often they bring offspring once or twice a year, but in the southern regions it can be three times. There is a main interval between each brood, which does not exceed 13 weeks. The breeding period will depend on many factors:

  • climate;
  • harvest;
  • population size.

Typically, the rutting time falls in January-March and can last until August. At this time, up to 6 males can be observed near the female, of which she makes a choice in favor of one. Males behave aggressively among themselves in order to eliminate a competitor. They can rumble loudly, paws against tree branches or chase each other. After making a choice, the family begins to build a nest for future offspring.

Pregnancy of a female lasts up to 38 days, one litter can number from 3 to 10 babies. Squirrels are born blind and without wool, which they overgrow in the second week of life. Kids will be able to see only after a month, after which they begin to get out of the hollow for games. Females feed the squirrels with their milk for 50 days. Brood leaves nest at 10 weeks. Animals can have their offspring at 9 or 12 months.

The lifespan of squirrels in captivity can reach 12 years, but for an animal in freedom, this figure is halved. In nature, there are many predators that hunt squirrels:

  • martens;
  • owls;
  • hawks;
  • foxes;
  • cats.

Significantly reduces the amount of protein due to the lack of adequate nutrition, as well as due to the presence of all kinds of diseases. Their immunity is well undermined by the presence of fleas, ticks and helminths.
